In celebration of World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day 2025, the La Digue Red Cross Office hosted a pivotal general meeting aimed at revitalising its presence and strengthening community engagement on the island.
This year’s general meeting served multiple strategic purposes: reconnecting with long-time volunteers, recruiting new members from the community, and launching plans for upcoming training and outreach initiatives. These efforts are designed to boost the Office’s human resource capacity in preparation for key national events, such as the upcoming General Elections, while ensuring the continued delivery of vital health and care programmes across La Digue.
One of the major outcomes of the meeting is the launch of a Volunteer Membership drive, which aims to increase the number of active volunteers to fifty (50) in the near future—a critical step toward expanding the Office’s impact and reach.
In his remarks during the meeting, Mr. Alex Jacob, Chairman of the La Digue Red Cross Office, expressed confidence in the renewed momentum of the branch.
“Today marks more than just a celebration—it’s a turning point. We are rebuilding the spirit of volunteerism on La Digue, and I am encouraged by the energy and commitment shown by both returning and new members. Together, we will strengthen our readiness and ensure our community is supported in times of need,” said Mr. Jacob.
The Red Cross was first introduced to the La Digue community in 1998, with La Digue School serving as the central hub for early activities. In those formative years, members, students, and teachers received training in First Aid and other life-saving skills to support community events, including the annual August 15th Festival and school sports days. The late Madam Yvonne Choppy, the first Chairperson of the La Digue Branch, was instrumental in laying the foundation for these early efforts.
The current Red Cross Office on La Digue stands as a testament to international and local cooperation. Constructed with financial support from the German Red Cross and land donated by the Government of Seychelles, it remains a vital center for humanitarian service on the island.
As the La Digue Red Cross Office charts a new path forward, the commitment to humanitarian values and community service continues to be at the heart of its mission.
