Patrick, 46 years old, was an active Red Cross volunteer, and became a first aid instructor since 2006. He dedicated all his time to alleviating human suffering during the aftermath of the disaster resulting from the January 2013 Felleng Tropical Depression.
He assisted in carrying out assessments, collecting and delivering assistance and he was particularly touched by the plight of the vulnerable especially the elderly who found it difficult to cope with the situation.
It was after this time that Patrick decided to join as a full time staff member as a First Aid Coordinator and instructor. During his time he ensured that a high quality first aid and ambulance service was delivered to the public, that volunteers were well trained and that the ambulance was well maintained. He trained many First aiders from work places, day cares, home of the elderly, hotels as well as individuals wanting to learn first aid. All who underwent training were highly appreciative and full of praise for Patrick who imparted the skill with ease and patience as he responded to the needs of each trainee. No distance was too far and he travelled round Mahe, to Praslin and La Digue as well as outer islands such as Alphonse and Farquhar.
The Red Cross Society through Patrick made great strides in realising one of its goals of having a First Aider in every home. On World First Aid Day this year celebrated on 14th of September Patrick was at the forefront of organising the event to show case the achievements of the Red Cross, a fitting tribute for his hard work over the past year.
For all the staff and volunteers Patrick will be sorely missed, his friendly disposition and disarming smile and his dedication for work well done. The Red Cross and Seychelles has lost a great humanitarian, but his legacy remains with all the first aiders he has trained who will continue to save lives, alleviate suffering and help those in need.
The President of the Red Cross Society of Seychelles Barbara Carolus- Andre and national committee members, the Secretary General Mrs Colette Servina and her management team and staff, Red Cross Branch Committee members ,volunteers , first aid instructors and first aiders of the Red Cross join in conveying our sincere condolences to Patrick’s family.
