The training was conducted by Red Cross Disaster and First Aid instructor Ms Sandra Sabury and attended by a group of enthusiastic Red Cross staff and volunteers and two participants from partner organisations in disaster response.
As a humanitarian organization The Red Cross acts in an auxiliary capacity to government agencies and actively participates in building capacity and resilience of communities through first aid, health and hygiene promotion, promoting blood donation, disaster preparedness and responding to emergencies.
In the event of a disaster the Red Cross is alerted by the government lead agency for disaster management and activates its command centre, its logistics team and its national disaster response team who in turn activates their community-based volunteer team members.
Following the workshop, the RCSS is in the process of setting up its regional teams for Central, North, South, East and West Mahe, Praslin and La Digue and organizing training for all the teams.
Red Cross volunteers who have already received training who wish to contribute to join community teams are invited to contact the Red Cross for constituting the regional teams.
