Following the heavy rainfall of yesterday which has now subsided a little, the Red Cross Society of Seychelles remain on alert. NS staff and volunteers still remain on standby.
NDRT leaders and other volunteers (around 25) in all regions of Mahe, were called to be on standby, after the Ministry of Local Government called the RCSS for activation of alert at 1139hrs today. The alert was activated as a result of heavy rainfall and strong wind which had already started impacts to certain places and households on Mahe.
The ambulance is also placed on standby along with one volunteer driver.
Feedback received from the District Administrator of the Anse Aux Pins district on Mahe informed that a landslide which had been reported to HQ by a volunteer earlier, was being dealt with on district level.
During the day of the 17th December, a number of volunteers were assisting with assessments for assistance. By 1800hrs, RCSS had so far received 4 requests for food assistance to families who have lost almost everything; assessments already conducted. 1 request from A.Royale, 1 A.A.Pins & 2 Cascade. Delivery is being organised.
The Seychelles Defence Force also deployed forty (40) officers to assist the NS, and the Disaster Risk Management Division and other national departments and agencies with response needs.
The RCSS also assisted a family at Cascade with tarpaulin sheets to temporarily cover the roofing of their house which was damaged by the heavy rain and strong wind.
Five (5) volunteers were assisting DRMD to fill gunny bags with sand for transportation to Corgate Estate in preparedness of any further potential rainfall during the night.
The RCSS Volunteer Response Team remain on standby for any eventuality of continued rainfall overnight or during the weekend.
A more detailed response with challenges and Way Forward recommendations will be provided by Monday 19th December.
