Commemorating World First Aid Day
WORLD FIRST AID DAY – SEPTEMBER 13TH, 2014
This year’s theme to commemorate World First Aid Day was entitled: “BE A HERO, SAVE LIVES”.
On the occasion of World First Aid day the Red Cross Society of Seychelles organized a series of activities through both media and onsite events to promote Fist Aid.
The activity kicked off by a small opening ceremony whereby President of the Red Cross Society of Seychelles Barbara Carolus-Andre read out the message for the occasion. Media houses where invited for coverage of the event where two groups of of newly qualified First Aiders from the SBC and Seychelles pension fund gathered to receive their certificates and identification cards.
Onsite exhibition and First Aid demonstrations by qualified First Aiders were held at two different spots in town: one at the Orion Mall and another at the Eden Island Mall. First aid kits were also on sale as well as flags saying “Learn First Aid”.
Individuals wanting to learn first aid were able to enroll for the activity while others who wished to join the Red Cross for volunteers were issued with application forms. Since it was a Saturday morning whereby many people come down town for shopping a very good turnout was anticipated and the participation of the public was beyond expectation. The objective of the activity was met and in general all those who organized expressed positive feedback regarding the activity.
This year the media coverage to commemorate the day was exceptional. The Secretary General was hosted in two TV programmes News Extra and Bonzour Sesel. The exhibition and demonstrations were relayed in the news as well as an interview with the Mahe Branch Coordinator who explained the importance of First Aid as well as the importance of being a trained first aider.
The effort to bring First Aid to the population does not end here, the RCSS endeavors to continue putting more efforts in order to materialize the objective of our strategic Plan 2012 – 2016; of having one First Aider in every home. So far this year almost 500 first aiders have been trained contributing to safety in the workplace and in the homes. Both staff and volunteers of the RCSS contribute immensely towards the achievements of this goal and they are thanked for coordinating the training, for their courage, patience and their endless humanitarian efforts.
