The Red Cross Society of Seychelles (RCSS) once again demonstrated its unwavering commitment to community support by actively participating in the 45th National Inter-School Athletics Championships. Seventy (70) dedicated volunteers, alongside staff members, were deployed to assist with ambulance services and first aid throughout the event, in collaboration with the Ministry of Health—as has been the tradition in recent years.
This year’s collaborative effort also saw the participation of first aiders from the Seychelles Police Force, the Division for Substance Abuse Prevention, Treatment and Rehabilitation (DSAPTR), the Ministry of Local Government and Community Affairs (MLGCA), and the Anti-Corruption Commission of Seychelles (ACCS). Together, these partners ensured a comprehensive and coordinated health and safety response during the championships.
A total of fourteen (14) Red Cross teams were strategically stationed around the athletics field, covering key operational areas including logistics, communication, sick bay, the finishing line, and more. Their presence ensured the safety and well-being of all athletes, spectators, and officials during the competition.
The RCSS was also proud to welcome two groups of aspiring nurses from secondary schools—English River, led by Ms. Juliet J. Kakoshi and Ms. Tessy Madelaine, and Plaisance, led by Ms. Sandra Sabury. These enthusiastic students gained hands-on experience assisting with first aid, showcasing both skill and compassion in real-time scenarios. Their involvement reflects the power of youth engagement and the bright future of healthcare in Seychelles.
Mrs. Karine Ernesta, Health Coordinator at RCSS, commended the smooth execution of logistical preparations, which were planned well in advance. However, she noted an ongoing challenge with volunteer numbers: “While our logistics were well in place, we continue to face constraints with volunteer availability. There’s still a pressing need for more volunteers to support such large-scale events.”
Despite this, Mrs. Ernesta expressed appreciation for the involvement of young people, particularly aspiring nurses from various schools, who contributed meaningfully to the event. “It’s encouraging to see the youth stepping up. Their enthusiasm and willingness to help are truly commendable.”
The Red Cross Society of Seychelles extends its heartfelt thanks to all the volunteers, partner agencies, and supporters who contributed their time, energy, and expertise to make this event a success. Your dedication and team spirit are invaluable.
The RCSS continues to advocate for increased volunteer engagement, especially from the youth, to build stronger, more resilient communities through service and humanitarian action.
To those inspired by the work of the Red Cross, Mrs. Ernesta shared a message of encouragement: “If you have the heart to serve and help others, we welcome you to join the Red Cross family. Together, we can continue to make a difference in our communities.”
